The throwing game from the SNES original was a hell of a lot better, and prepared you to fight Bleak. I especially hate that lame Sonic 2 thing that Swanky has in DKC3. The fact that they're required for 100% completion drives me up the wall. They're jarring, tedious, and in some cases, unnecessarily difficult, and none of them feel like they belong in a Donkey Kong game. They make some improvements (smoother animations, for one, and fixing the hyperactive Kong glitch from DKC3), but the majority of their additions diminish the experience in some way or another. The GBA ports are fun enough to take on a long flight, but I'd never choose to play them if the originals were also available. Jeez, none of you guys saw fit to inform Doggo that the Laylee avatar is taken? Some friends you are!Īnyway, the SNES originals win, hands down, no bones about it. Just because I don't think they come close to being "better", they ARE different, and therefore worth experiencing. That being said, as Joe points out, they're still worth playing for DKC fans. To me the difference between those two games come down to you personal preference of the soundtrack, but with the former two games, there's not even anything resembling a contest. The only one with a legitimate case of comparison is DKC3 because they did add a whole world, and a totally different soundtrack. If portability isn't a plus, then I'm forced to choose between Audio and visual quality, vs minigames, and I choose the former. They all DO have the novelty of being portable, which was awesome in the GBA days, but you can get the originals on 3DS now so they novelty is no longer unique. They look worse, sound worse, and control worse. The first two added a level each and the third one a whole world, plus there's mini games, but though there's more, the overall quality is significantly worse. The GBA ports prove that More isn't necessarily Better. The levels themselves do almost all look better too (though I do like the small things, like little mice walking around in the backgrounds of the remakes) and these have quite a significant impact on my enjoyment, which means that I like both versions almost equally I'd love to hear a SNES-level quality version of the Donkey Kong Country 3's GBA soundtrack. It's a big shame that Donkey Kong Country 3 did not have this feature, but then that game got a whole extra world, so it hardly got the short end of the stick!īut then, as much as I do love the extras in the remakes, when I play the originals the quality of the music is just a lot better. Also, finding the photos is a fun extra challenge. I love just looking through them, because the artwork you collect for them is fantastic. I am particularly fond of the photo scrap books in the first two GBA games as well. I'm happy that there are alternative versions of each of these games to play. I like the extra dialogue in the remakes and I like a lot of the new sound effects. ![]() Of course, that's an extremely subjective thing to enjoy. If you were to play the GBA Donkey Kong Country followed by Banjo-Kazooie, it's easier to imagine they're connected. If you were to play Donkey Kong Country and then Banjo-Kazooie, they'd feel very different and it's hard to imagine them as part of a shared universe. What I like about the GBA games is that they mesh very well with other Rare games of that time. I enjoy both sets as different experiences although I think I lean slightly more towards the SNES versions. ![]() Copyright 2015-2016 Red Hook Studios Inc. Darkest Dungeon 2 has been in early access for well over a year now, but version 1.0 has finally received a release date, meaning players wont have to wait much longer until they can get their hands on the full release of the brutal dungeon-crawling roguelike. Uncover strange mysteries, and pit your heroes against an array of fearsome monsters with an innovative strategic turn-based combat system.Ĭan you stem the tide of eldritch horrors erupting across your family’s ancestral estate? You'll battle not only unimaginable foes, but stress, famine, disease, and the ever-encroaching dark. Recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes through twisted forests, forgotten warrens, ruined crypts, and beyond. To me that's not broken, that's actually what the game IS.Darkest Dungeon® is a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring. Risk plays out on its own terms and I love the challenge of trying to overcome that obstacle. ![]() I like to think of this game in that same light. Epic sports teams can lose when it counts due to injuries or player mentalities breaking down, in cribbage you can get skunked or skunk someone because of a single bad cut. Rather than cry a game is broken I'd say get better or lose your attitude of always winning. I personally think this is a groundbreaking game but not for anyone who is unwilling to spend some time with the game and nerd out. This allows for almost infinite gameplay and strategy and then of course there is luck to interfere or bolster. There is tons of loot with many upgrade possibilities and the gameplay is high risks for high rewards or low risk for low rewards. There are tons of characters with tons of abilities, likewise for the enemies. In this respect the game is near perfect in my opinion. From my perspective the game may not be ones style but it is a roque game and done brilliantly with so much to consider during gameplay. People unwilling to adapt and learn the games mechanics will cry this game is "too hard, broken or not their style". To enjoy this game I do think you have to be willing to be a nerd and learn every nook and cranny of info you can from this game. ![]() I have completed about 15 hours gameplay and have finally just really become comfortable with the game. I personally have nothing bad to say about this game except that it could have used an expanded tutorial. Personally my favourite games involve both elements of strategy and luck and this game is exactly that. I really believe the evolution of gaming has taken a huge step forward with games such as this one. I predict within 10 years EA and Bioware will finally implode and it will have been games produced by kickstarter such as this and pillars of I predict within 10 years EA and Bioware will finally implode and it will have been games produced by kickstarter such as this and pillars of eternity and other indie games that really started the downfall of these companies and their cookie cutter games. ![]() Who doesn’t love a good bloodbath? Not Vanillaware that’s who. Attacks are punchy, have weight, and the gorgeous animation is the cherry on top, augmenting the feeling of massacring two dozen orcs as they flood the screen. We won’t even talk about magic classes, because everyone knows magic isn’t real.Īt the end of the day, the game feels balanced as breakfast. Heavier, easy classes such as the Knight always have their weapon on hand, and will only be separated from it by taking a strong blow or using a rare move that leaves them empty-handed for a moment. Ammo isn’t sparse, but since arrows don’t grow on trees, they have to be punched out of a lizard man every now and then. Not that this isn’t a game about button-mashing, but the tradeoff of landing an easy blow can come at the cost of a class who isn’t as versatile as one with more flexible attacks.įor instance, the range-based Elf finds herself in a constant hunt for arrows, which deplete as they are used. While no character feels overpowered, they do play at different levels of complexity, which provides an engaging experience for seasoned players, without having to alienate novice players who just want to button mash for mayhem. I found myself comfortable with the Elf, although each class has its give-and-take against another. The centerpiece of Dragon’s Crown is in the gameplay, so at least there’s one game this generation that doesn’t feel a need to shove its plot down your throat. ![]() Email me if you have any idea what 6 x 20 is.ĭragon’s Crown drops players into its arcadey beat-em-up world with the an endearingly shallow medieval tale of a legendary crown, the king who died trying to find it, and your job to finish the quest to control dragons, or just one dragon. Since they’re also using math for estimating 20 hours per each of six class-based characters, we’ll just take their word for it that anyone can get their fill.Īlternatively, there’s this neat little 20-hour Vanillaware game we’re reviewing that hit the PS3 and Vita this week. A developer-noted 120 hours of content isn’t necessarily concise for Dragon’s Crown, but Vanillaware’s hallmark of titles overstaying their welcome is pardoned with the inclusion of cooperative and PvP multiplayer - which have both been known to extensively lengthen any game’s lifespan. Coming from a history of struggling to create the perfect 2D homage/RPG hybrid game around, Vanillaware finally seems to be hitting their mark of blending action-based gameplay without weighing the initial thrill down with their habitually long-winded game length. Using the word ‘fun’ almost makes it sound like this game was worth playing. It’s almost days of fun once you notice your hours spent in-game. Local or online based co-op bring together four players to stomp around a gorgeous 2D world full of monster-shaped punching bags for hours of fun. ![]() What’s so special about the original Dragon’s Crown is that it happens to be one of the first arcade games to stay above water outside of an arcade setting– whatever arcades are. We’ll get back to that analogy when Dragon’s Crown 2 and Dragon’s Crown: Inquisitor (a mobile game probably) come out in two years. Remember when Robocop wasn’t part of our lexicon? Nobody does. Like before Robocop was Robocop 2, and just Robocop without a number. “New IP” is just a big word for original creations. Hopefully for them, it was a successful PSA that they’re still making video games, because new IP is on the market and it’s got their logo on it. The last we heard of Vanillaware, they were celebrating the re-release of Muramasa on the PS Vita. Are they good? Is it good? Is anything good? Objectively, Vanillaware’s first HD game is in our midst, and has a lot of reasons to write about it. Boobs, Golden Axe, Dungeons & Dragons, Japan.Īre you interested? In what is its 20th year we are honoured to bring you the Wild At Heart Series as part of our weekly FIGHT CLUB gathering, beginning on Monday 10 May at 8pm and running for 6 weeks, via Zoom. Part one is here and part two is here.Written by John Eldridge and first published in 2001 ‘Wild At Heart – discovering the secret of a man’s soul’ has grown to be one of the best-selling books on Christian masculinity, around the world. I highly recommend you read Garry Gilley’s reviews. It speaks volumes about the Protestant world that this book has been so widely embraced. Yes, Eldredge attempts to hold everything together with some smatterings of Scripture, but when you evaluate this book honestly you have to see that this is mere humanism and psychology wrapped in a thin veil of Christianity. I could go on, but really, what’s the point? This book only resembles a Christian book in the most vague sense. He also speaks to him through movies, books and so on.
